A few weeks ago, a Chinese friend of mine who mostly hires EU based roles shared with me a recent request he received. A Chinese trading company — annual revenue around USD 8M, profit only USD 600–800K, and they heavily reliant on one single UK customer — The company boss asked him to hire a BD Head in the UK with a budget of USD 300K. That’s three times the local market rate. My friend was stunned. “How can a company with profit of less than 1 million afford a foreign executive costing 300K?” And that moment immediately reminded me of what Charlie Munger said: “If I knew where I was going to die, I’d never go there.”
