There is an undeniable sense of nostalgia and a deep connection when one returns to their hometown. The journey back to where it all began holds a special place in our hearts, evoking memories of the past and a longing to reconnect with our roots. In this article, we will explore the profound benefits of going back to my hometown in Perlis, Malaysia, and the unique experience of writing about the 90-year-old home constructed by my great-great-grandfather. Join me on this heartfelt journey as we delve into the significance of reconnecting with our origins.

I would like to revisit the nostalgic memories of my beloved old kampung house. Returning to my hometown, I discovered that it wasn’t just the physical structure of the house that I missed, but also the cherished moments of my childhood. The house is located in Kampung Padang Pauh, my place of birth, where I was raised, and where my parents still reside.

This remarkable house, established in 1352 Hijri or 1933 Gregorian, has stood the test of time, now nearing its 90th year in 2023. It holds within its walls a rich history and a wealth of stories that span generations.

One notable feature adorning the house is the exquisite carving, popularly known as “Ukiran Awan Larat.” This masterpiece was intricately crafted by the late Haji Yaakob from Alor Sena, Perlis, a renowned woodcarver in the region. The artistry and skill evident in this carving exemplify the cultural heritage and craftsmanship of Perlis.

In preserving this precious connection to the past, I am reminded of the profound significance that lies within the walls of my old kampung house. It is a testament to the enduring bonds of family, tradition, and the profound beauty that can be found in the simplest of places.

Principle of “Ukiran Awan Larat”. The first principle is balanced space. This means that the spaces within Malay artistic carvings must be balanced with each other. Carvings in every area of the artwork must have an equal distribution among them to avoid imbalance in the carving.

The second principle of “awan larat” is empty space. In Malay carvings, empty spaces must be carved to achieve balance.

The third principle is vegetation. This also means that human figures cannot be used in Malay carving art, which aligns with the requirements of Islam.

The motif of “ibu” or the main motif is also one of the key principles of “awan larat” that should be emphasized by the carver. These “ibu” motifs refer to motifs such as leaves, flowers, and branches. These motifs are essential elements in Malay carving art. Later on, these “ibu” motifs will be surrounded by other patterns around them.

Have you ever had the experience of returning to the house where you grew up? If so, did you find yourself going to each room and being flooded with memories of past incidents and moments, whether it be in the corners or on the balcony?

I consider myself fortunate that the home I was born and raised in, located in Perlis, Malaysia, is still the same house where my parents currently reside. I often come back to visit, and as I write this article, I find myself in this very house, reflecting on my memories.

This case study revolves around my journey as a man who, upon reaching the age of 49 in June 2023, felt compelled to write about my old house. Several reasons were driving this desire. Sitting in the house, I was naturally inclined to reminisce and the life I had back then. The prevailing theme was often centered around the “good old days,” and how they seemed to be the best of times when compared to the present world. I hoped to recapture memories of my parents and extended family. Perhaps simply turning 49 was reason enough to evoke these nostalgic feelings for the old place.

I am contemplating the various aspects and advantages that come to mind when I reflect on my home. I am confident that many others will resonate with these thoughts as well. With that in mind, I would like to share the following list of points and topics that I have compiled.

  1. Reconnecting with Family Heritage: Returning to my hometown provides a remarkable opportunity to reconnect with my family’s heritage. The 90-year-old home, built by my great-great-grandfather, serves as a tangible reminder of the generations that came before me. Exploring the house and its surroundings offers a chance to understand and appreciate the rich history and cultural legacy passed down through my family. It deepens our sense of identity and strengthens our bonds with our ancestors.
  2. Preservation of Family Stories: Writing about the ancestral home allows me to document and preserve the stories and memories associated with it. As time passes, details can fade, and the significance of certain events may become blurred. By capturing these stories through writing, we ensure that the legacy of our family and the unique history of the house is safeguarded for future generations. It becomes a testament to the lives lived within its walls and a treasure trove of cherished anecdotes.
  3. Reflection and Self-Discovery: Returning to my hometown and immersing myself in the environment of the old home offers a valuable opportunity for reflection and self-discovery. The familiarity of the surroundings, coupled with the weight of history, encourages introspection and a deeper understanding of our journey. It allows us to revisit our roots, reevaluate our values, and gain insights into how our upbringing has shaped us into the individuals we are today.
  4. Appreciation for Cultural and Architectural Heritage: The 90-year-old home stands as a testament to the architectural and cultural heritage of Perlis. By exploring its unique design, traditional elements, and intricate craftsmanship, we gain a greater appreciation for the historical significance of the house and the cultural traditions it represents. It becomes a lens through which we can understand and celebrate the cultural richness of our hometown.
  5. Sense of Belonging and Community: Returning to my hometown provides an opportunity to reconnect with the local community and foster a sense of belonging. Engaging with neighbors, old friends, and community members who share a common history creates a strong sense of camaraderie and solidarity. It reinforces the importance of community bonds and the collective memories that tie us together.

Returning to my hometown in Perlis and writing about the 90-year-old ancestral home has been a deeply enriching and meaningful experience. It has allowed me to reconnect with my roots, preserve family history, and gain a renewed appreciation for the cultural heritage that shaped my upbringing.

This journey of rediscovery offers valuable insights, self-reflection, and a profound sense of belonging. As we embark on similar journeys to our hometowns, let us embrace the opportunity to cherish and celebrate the legacy of our ancestors, fostering a deeper connection to our past and a brighter vision for the future.

As I conclude this reflection on my childhood home and the cherished memories it holds, I am reminded of the words of Marcel Proust: “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

Indeed, returning to the place where we grew up allows us to see the familiar with a fresh perspective and to rediscover the magic woven within its walls.

The memories that reside within those hallowed halls are like fragments of a time long gone, yet they continue to shape who we are today. From the laughter that echoed in the living room to the secrets shared under the stars on the balcony, every corner of that home holds a treasure trove of nostalgia.

It is within those walls that I learned the meaning of love, witnessed the resilience of family bonds, and discovered the power of simple joys. The creaking wooden floors, the scent of home-cooked meals wafting through the air, and the familiar sights that greeted me every day – they all form the tapestry of my childhood, woven with love, laughter, and tears.

In revisiting my old home, I am transported back in time, guided by the whispers of cherished moments and the echoes of innocent laughter. It is a journey that reminds me of the importance of staying connected to our roots, honoring the past, and carrying forward the lessons learned within those walls.

Though time may have cast its veil upon the physical aspects of the house, its spirit lives on within me and all those who have called it home. And as I stand in its presence once again, I am filled with gratitude for the memories that have shaped my life and the everlasting bond I share with my childhood home.

In the end, it is not merely a structure made of bricks and mortar, but a sanctuary of love, a repository of stories, and a vessel of cherished memories. As I bid farewell to my childhood home once more, I carry with me a deep appreciation for the experiences it has gifted me and the person it has helped me become.

May the legacy of that old house continue to inspire future generations, just as how it does to me. For within its humble walls, lie the imprints of our past and the seeds of our future.

I miss my home. I miss my late grandmother; Tok Nah. I miss my late grandfather; Chaq.
