As a child growing up in a prominent middle-class family in Zimbabwe, Christmas was always a magical time for Cathy. It meant returning to her parents’ farm, connecting with relatives and villagers she hadn’t seen for months, wearing new clothes, dancing to music, playing games, and sharing delicious food. But since Cathy’s arrival in the UK in 2018 — after her Congolese husband was deported from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and since her own political activism made it unsafe for them to return to Zimbabwe — Christmas has been a heart-breaking time of year.
