From compression cubes to AirTags, social media is full of clever travel packing tricks. Some prove to be genuinely practical, while others leave frequent flyers and airport staff raising their eyebrows.
One recent viral example featured a traveler who suggested using a zip tie to keep luggage secure. The idea quickly drew responses from airport workers, who warned that this method can actually create more problems than it solves.
An airline ramp agent named Ali explained that tying or locking zippers together may prevent baggage handlers from helping if a suitcase accidentally bursts open. Normally, if luggage splits during transit, staff can gather the items, return them to the bag, and zip it shut again. But with a lock or zip tie in place, the suitcase cannot be reopened without cutting it, which often leaves belongings exposed. “We’d do our best to stuff everything back inside,” Ali noted, “but your bag would still end up partially open.”
Ali also demonstrated just how easy it is for someone with bad intentions to get around luggage locks. Using only a ballpoint pen, they showed how quickly the teeth of a zipper can be forced apart, regardless of whether the pulls are secured.
Given how many people handle checked luggage once it leaves your care, Ali recommends keeping valuables with you in carry-on bags. For checked baggage, they personally pack only clothing.
The Australian Government’s Smart Traveller advisory also encourages passengers to take steps to protect their luggage from tampering or theft, though it stops short of suggesting one specific method. — Travel Nine
