The reason for the stunning Genesis Wingback wagon concept is simple, says Genesis president and chief creative officer Luc Donckerwolke: He wants to build it. “I get feedback that high-power wagons are not that cool outside of Germany, but if you look at the success of competitors on the U.S. market, that tells me the opposite,” he says. Now, it’s true that high-performance wagons, like high-performance sedan-based coupes, are niche products, which is why no one other than Germany’s luxury automakers build them. But Donckerwolke believes one of the future strengths of Hyundai Motor Group’s luxury division will be its ability to quickly develop and build low volume, coachbuilt vehicles like the muscular Wingback and the elegant X Gran Coupe to serve those niches. And the Wingback, like the X Gran Coupe, first seen in Seoul in April, has been carefully designed to make it as easy and cost-effective to build as possible.
