AI data centers in Scotland are using enough water to fill 27 million half-liter bottles every year, according to the BBC. AI data centers are popping up all over the world, including 16 in Scotland. That number is also expected to grow in the coming years. These centers require a lot of power and use large amounts of water. The water keeps the hard drives cool enough to answer the questions and perform the tasks that people around the world regularly ask of AI. Right now, most of these systems are considered “open loop.” The water comes in, cools the system, and doesn’t get reused. Colin Lindsay, an operations manager with Scottish Water, said: “Open-loop systems use enormous amounts of water.”
