In one of my first stories for SURFER, I wrote The World’s First Zero-Waste Island. As you could assume it was about the process of Tilos Island, Greece to completely eliminate waste. Even though the island has a tiny population, this was no small feat.
I name how the true challenge would be to scale this zero-waste approach to an island like Bali—one of the most iconic destinations in surfing, that has also become one of the most polluted. Recently, the Governor of Bali, I Wayan Koster, has signaled his intention to do just that as part of his “New Era” vision focused on harmony through stricter regulations and the goal of becoming trash-free by 2027.
