It’s a tale as old as time. Final Fantasy VII was the turning point for the JRPG genre. The title wasn’t just responsible for establishing Square or its franchise as a powerhouse, but also for introducing the public to a more accessible RPG design, focused on a linear narrative with pre-defined characters. It was also a risky bet. Square broke off its partnership with Nintendo, put its faith in Sony’s new console, and invested millions in the game’s production.
