“Yellowstone” Movie Review: Is It Worth Watching?

As usual, I’m always the latecomer when it comes to watching movies. Just so you know, I just finished binge-watching all three seasons of Yellowstone. It took me just under a week to complete the whole three seasons. And the best part is, I’ve completed more than half of Season 1 in one night—somehow I couldn’t stop it. Thanks to an important meeting I needed to go to the next day, I just somehow needed to switch off the TV and go to bed.

But seriously, Yellowstone is almost a perfect movie—to me. It managed to keep me glued to the screen. The characters are so complex and well-developed, you feel like you know them, and the scenery? Absolutely breathtaking.

I like this John Dutton character. I can relate to him and his struggle to keep things together. I guess it’s the age thing. I’m 51 by the way. Kevin Costner plays John Dutton, the tough-as-nails patriarch of the Dutton family, pretty well. But honestly, it’s not just Kevin Costner. The whole cast is brilliant, especially Kelly Reilly as the fierce and fiery Beth Dutton. I like Rip Wheeler too, portrayed by Cole Hauser.

Enough about the casts, I want to highlight another powerful thing about Yellowstone that many movies don’t quite match just yet—the scriptwriting. It’s top-notch. It’s sharp. That’s the exact part I can resonate with Beth. She knows how to destroy people with words, leaving all of them cowering in shame. It’s a powerful moment that showcases Beth’s strength and her refusal to settle in the situations she’s in. I salute the scriptwriters for this, really. It’s the script that makes Yellowstone so compelling.

Of course, Yellowstone isn’t without its flaws, especially to Asian viewers like me. Aside from those violent scenes at times, the sex scenes are a little too much to bear. If I want to watch Yellowstone in my living room, I will make sure there are no kids nearby. I would just fast-forward that specific scene altogether. Let’s be honest: being Asian, this sort of culture doesn’t suit us. It’s just wrong to watch people having sex openly like that.

The Season 3 ending is also another thing I want to talk about. Personally, it’s just a shock to see John being hit like that. But again, it’s a good way of asking me to wait for new seasons, which I heard will be on air pretty soon.

So if you’re a fan of Westerns, or if you enjoy shows with complex characters and plots, then Yellowstone is definitely worth checking out. Just be prepared for a wild ride. Overall, Yellowstone is a really good movie—to me. Again, highly recommended, but with a little warning. Be prepared for some intense moments and steamy sex scenes too. Just make sure no kids are around you when watching it.
