We’re used to a very personalized world these days. We felt the entitlement for quick answers and attention. This makes job hunting frustrating when you don’t hear back after applying. As a recruiter and headhunter, I get it. Here’s why it happens.
It’s not that we don’t care. We really do want to give everyone a good experience. But the way things are now, it’s just not possible.
1. So Many Applicants: Technology makes it easy to apply for jobs, which means recruiters get flooded with applications. We’re talking hundreds, even thousands, for one job. It’s impossible to reply to everyone. Think of it like trying to answer every single email in your inbox if you got thousands every day.
2. Tools Aren’t That Great: You’d think there would be apps to help us manage all these applications and give everyone feedback. But the tools we have aren’t that good at personalizing things. They can send automatic replies, but those feel impersonal. Giving real feedback to everyone would take way too long. Also, typically bosses also don’t want to spend much on this part.
3. We Do More Than Just Read Resumes: Recruiting is more than just looking at resumes. We also have to find people, do interviews, talk to managers, and a million other things. Internal recruiters, especially, have tons to do. This means less time for individual replies.
4. We Hate Giving Bad News: It’s not a good excuse, but some recruiters avoid replying because they don’t want to give bad news. They’re worried about how people will react. It’s something the industry needs to work on, because honest communication is important.
5. You Might Not Be the Right Fit: Sometimes, even if you’re qualified, you’re just not the right fit for that specific job. We’re looking for someone who matches exactly what the company needs. It’s not about you personally; it’s about the job.
So, next time you don’t hear back, it’s probably not because the recruiter is rude. It’s more likely because they’re overwhelmed, the tools aren’t great, or you just weren’t the perfect match for that role. It’s a tough system, and hopefully, it will get better in the future.
That is why now I am into headhunting which gives me the leverage to work exclusively with specific clients, just a handful of roles at times. Then now I am not so guilty at the charges of ‘ghosting’.
