Law enforcement authorities have apprehended a man and a woman following their suspected involvement in a disturbing incident involving severe physical harm and alleged drug use. The arrests were made after police were alerted to a widely circulated social media video, which captured a transaction between two men escalating into a brutal assault.
The catalyst for the investigation was a Facebook post from May 6th, which featured a video depicting the exchange of a plastic bag containing an unidentified substance. Immediately following this exchange, one of the men launched a violent attack on the other. This distressing footage rapidly gained significant traction online, amassing over 1.4 million views and approximately 7,000 shares, prompting public concern and police intervention.
A joint investigation was swiftly launched by officers from the Central Police Division and the Criminal Investigation Department. Collaborating with the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) and the Singapore Prison Service, authorities successfully identified the individuals involved: the male victim, the 31-year-old male assailant, and a 35-year-old woman. Preliminary investigations suggest that the woman was allegedly responsible for recording the violent episode.
Subsequently, officers from both the police force and the CNB conducted a targeted raid at a residence located along Sengkang West Way. During this operation, the couple was apprehended on suspicion of voluntarily causing grievous hurt with common intention and for alleged drug consumption. Furthermore, the male suspect was also arrested for the possession of scheduled weapons.
The raid yielded a significant cache of items, including two machetes, an axe, a baseball bat, three mobile phones, over $3,000 in cash, 14 e-vaporisers, and more than 450 related components. The video itself vividly portrays the sequence of events: the victim, wearing a yellow shirt, hands over a white plastic bag to the other man, who is dressed in a long-sleeved shirt and jeans. Following an exchange of money, the man in the long-sleeved shirt suddenly and violently strikes the victim. The assault continues relentlessly as the victim falls to the ground, with visible bloodstains appearing on his face.
In a strong statement, the authorities emphasized their unwavering stance against such blatant acts of violence and flagrant disregard for the law. They affirmed their commitment to taking decisive action against perpetrators and ensuring severe penalties in accordance with the legal framework.
Additionally, the authorities highlighted the legal ramifications associated with e-vaporisers. Individuals found guilty under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act for the importation, distribution, sale, or offering for sale of e-vaporisers and their components face a potential fine of up to $10,000 and a jail term of up to six months, or both, for a first offense. Repeat offenders can face even harsher penalties, including fines up to $20,000 and imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both. This underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating both the violent crime and the possession of prohibited items.
