WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp is on a roll when it comes to introducing new features lately. Most recently, there has been a rumour about WhatsApp testing usernames as an alternate way of identification in addition to just phone numbers. Meta is not just testing out its screen-sharing feature, but also a few other features during video calls.
Soon, you can securely share your screen with the person you are speaking to and have a more interactive experience. According to WABetaInfo, the new WhatsApp update (beta for Android 2.23.11.19) is only available for a few users at this time. During the test, if you have access to the feature, you will see a prompt at the bottom of your screen in the call control panel which enables you to share your screen with others.
The test also revealed that large group video calls may not work with the feature, and it might not be accessible if either party is running an older version of Android or WhatsApp. WhatsApp will always confirm that the recipient of your video call is able to see whatever you are displaying on your screen before the transmission happens. You will be in full control of the call — if you need to stop screen sharing, you have the option to do so during the call. No matter where you are in the conversation, you can end screen sharing at any time.
This type of feature is fairly commonplace on messaging and voice call applications such as Discord, if you’re familiar with them. The report states that this will be gradually made available to a wider audience in the coming weeks. It is yet to be determined if this includes only the beta version users or all of them.
It appears that WhatsApp could make an official announcement soon. It is likely that these features will be released to the general user base in the near future.
