We Are Living In The Hungry World Of Social Media Likes And Validation, And This Is Not Good

After observing individuals at a restaurant yesterday, I am compelled to share this article. To my left, a group of young people pulled out four phones and proceeded to take photos of their food. At another table, individuals were taking selfies with their meals, while another table seemed to be recording live videos on platforms such as TikTok or other social media outlets.

This prompted me to ponder: What has become of our sense of privacy? As an introvert, I find myself perturbed by this way of life, where everything is put on display, and every detail is shared without reservation.

It is perfectly acceptable to capture moments through photographs and preserve them as cherished memories. There is nothing inherently wrong with that. However, what I am trying to convey is that people have begun to artificially portray their lives to everyone, striving to maintain an artificial facade. The emphasis is on showcasing a flawless image, where everything appears perfect and great. Yet, the reality of life is far from being a smooth and effortless journey. Life is not always as idyllic as we portray it to be. Life is not a bed of roses, even though you’re selling roses.

Social media transforms our life significantly

In today’s digital age, the rise of social media has fundamentally transformed the way we live and interact. As an active participant in this virtual realm, I have observed with concern the growing trend of artificial living. In this personal review, I aim to share my thoughts and experiences on the effects of social media on our lives, exploring the drawbacks of this artificial existence.

The illusion of perfection

One of the most striking aspects of social media is the cultivation of a meticulously crafted facade of perfection. Users meticulously curate their online personas, showcasing only the highlights of their lives. The pursuit of likes and followers has created an environment where authenticity takes a back seat, leaving behind a shallow portrayal of reality. This constant comparison to idealized versions of others’ lives can lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt.

Validation seeking behavior

The need for validation has become pervasive in the age of social media. Individuals often find themselves trapped in a cycle of seeking approval through likes, comments, and followers. This external validation has become a barometer of self-worth, dictating our actions and decisions. It is disheartening to witness how people are willing to compromise their authenticity and even engage in questionable behavior simply to gain popularity and recognition.

Distortion of real-life experiences

Social media has blurred the line between genuine experiences and virtual performances. Instead of savoring and cherishing moments, there is an increasing inclination to document and share every aspect of our lives. This constant need to capture the perfect photo or create the most appealing narrative detracts from living in the present moment. Our focus shifts from truly enjoying experiences to seeking approval and validation from others.

Impact on mental well-being

The impact of artificial living on our mental well-being cannot be overstated. The constant exposure to carefully curated highlight reels of others’ lives can lead to feelings of inadequacy, envy, and even depression. The pressure to conform to societal expectations and the fear of missing out (FOMO) perpetuates a constant state of anxiety and dissatisfaction. We become more concerned with projecting a desirable image rather than nurturing our own mental health and genuine connections.

Rediscovering authenticity

It is crucial to find ways to reclaim authenticity in our lives. We must recognize that social media is a tool that can be used to enhance our experiences rather than define them. It is essential to cultivate a healthy relationship with these platforms by setting boundaries, practising self-care, and valuing real-life connections. By reconnecting with our true selves and embracing vulnerability, we can escape the grip of artificial living and rediscover the beauty of genuine experiences.

Conclusion

In this personal and sincere note, I have shared my concerns regarding artificial living which have become increasingly prevalent on social media platforms. The pursuit of validation, the pressure to conform, and the distortion of real-life experiences have significant implications for our mental well-being and overall authenticity. Let us strive for a more balanced approach, using social media as a tool for connection and self-expression while valuing our real-life experiences and relationships. By embracing our true selves and seeking genuine connections, we can navigate the digital landscape with authenticity and find fulfillment beyond the confines of artifice.
