A video circulating online has drawn widespread attention after it captured a mother bringing her young daughter to the hospital with a fruit knife embedded in the child’s head.
The incident occurred on August 15 in Kunming, Yunnan province, when security footage showed the woman calmly accompanying her three-year-old daughter into Dongchuan People’s Hospital. Both appeared composed, despite the alarming injury.
Reports indicate that the mother, identified by her surname Hu, initially told doctors the accident happened while she was changing bedsheets. She claimed the motion of the sheet sent a nearby fruit knife flying, striking her daughter as the child played. However, a hospital staff member later revealed that Hu admitted to picking up the knife in an attempt to frighten her daughter, who was having a tantrum, and accidentally hit her instead.
The knife, measuring about 15 centimeters, penetrated the girl’s skull just above her right ear, with part of the blade left visible. Hu tried unsuccessfully to pull it out before deciding to take her daughter directly to the hospital rather than call an ambulance.
Footage shows the toddler walking into the medical facility hand in hand with her mother. A staff member in a white coat meets them at the entrance and guides them inside for immediate care. —SCMP
