A surprising twist unfolded on TikTok when a woman named Neta Murphy discovered that her newly acquired croissant-shaped lamp from Temu, a popular online marketplace, was… well, edible.
Murphy, who goes by the username @froginahatgirl, shared a video on September 2nd showcasing her unexpected culinary find. She had received the lamp as a gift and noticed a small hole in it. Curiosity piqued, she investigated and discovered a swarm of ants underneath. This seemed odd, as she assumed the lamp was merely shaped like a croissant but was not actually food.
In a shocking turn of events, Murphy decided to break open the lamp like a piece of bread. To her astonishment, the inside revealed a flaky, pastry-like texture. Crumbs fell out as she poked it. She even took a tiny bite and confirmed that it was, in fact, a real croissant.
The video quickly went viral, amassing millions of views and sparking a wave of disbelief and humor among netizens. Many were left wondering if Murphy had truly eaten a lamp. Some joked about similar experiences with other food-shaped items from Temu.
A possible explanation for the edible lamp was offered by a TikTok user, dreya180. They suggested that the lamp might be inspired by the work of Yukiko Morita, an artist known for creating lamps from preserved bread and pastry. These lamps are hollowed out and treated with an anti-fungal coating to prevent decay.
As of September 10th, Temu had not issued an official statement regarding the viral video.
