The tragedy in October 2022 that killed 135 people, including more than 40 children was the worst stadium disaster in Indonesian football history.

It all started when tear gas was fired by the police into packed stadium stands after some supporters invaded the pitch at the end of the football match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya. Spectators then fled through the narrow stadium exits after that, leaving many crushed that left them suffocated to death.

Due to the tragedy, five men will be charged with negligence, consisting of 3 local police officers, a match organiser and a security official. 5 years imprisonment awaits if found guilty. The sixth suspect will be the former director of the company running the Indonesian premier league. The case involving this suspect however is still under investigation.
