The Relationship Between Character and Philosophy Behind Archery

Azad Jasmi | July 30, 2024

Today, I conducted a discussion and brainstorming session on the direction for segmentation in Malaysia and globally.

During the discussion, I drew connections with the philosophy of archery, particularly because the company’s owner is a professional archer.

Let’s take a closer look at archery, which emphasizes calmness, precision, focus, and strategy, and how these principles are remarkably similar to those required in business.

In archery, every action taken results from meticulous planning and unwavering focus on the target.

Similarly, in business, success requires strategic planning, precision in execution, focus on goals, and calmness in facing challenges.

I am sharing this article on how these principles can be applied in the corporate world to achieve greater success.

Archery is not just a physical activity; it is also a reflection of deep character and philosophy. Archery demands calmness, precision, focus, and good strategy to hit the target. Each arrow released is not only about physical goals but also mental and spiritual objectives.

Archery in the Sunnah

Prophet Muhammad SAW strongly encouraged Muslims to learn the art of archery. He said:

“Teach your children archery, swimming, and horse riding.” (HR. Al-Bukhari)

This hadith shows the importance of archery in the life of a Muslim. Besides for self-defense, archery also teaches us many important values that can be applied in daily life.

The Philosophy of Archery in Strategy Development

In a recent strategy development session, I was inspired by the philosophy behind archery. I realized that the key elements in archery – calmness, precision, focus, and strategy – are highly relevant in planning and executing business strategies.

Benefits of Archery

1. Enhancing Focus: Archery requires full concentration on the target. This sharp focus helps improve the ability to concentrate in other situations, such as at work or in study.

2. Teaching Patience: Each arrow released requires patience and time. This patience is key to achieving success in any field, including business.

3. Building Discipline: Archery requires continuous practice and high discipline. This discipline is an important factor in achieving long-term goals.

4. Improving Calmness: To shoot an arrow accurately, the archer needs to be calm. This calmness can help reduce stress and improve mental well-being.

5. Improving Hand-Eye Coordination: Archery requires good coordination between the eyes and hands, which can help improve fine motor skills.

Precision in Archery

Precision is a crucial element in archery. Every movement, from drawing the bowstring to releasing the arrow, requires careful attention.

Success in archery depends not only on physical strength but also on precision in every step. Similarly, in business, precision in every aspect of operations and strategy is key to achieving success.

The Philosophy of Archery in Business

In the business world, the philosophy of archery can be applied in various ways:

1. Calmness in Facing Challenges: Like an archer who needs to be calm before releasing the arrow, business leaders also need to remain calm when making important decisions. Calmness helps us think clearly and make wise decisions.

2. Focus on Goals: Just like an archer who constantly focuses on the target, in business, we need to set clear goals and focus on achieving them. This requires careful planning and strategic execution.

3. Appropriate Strategy: Archery is not just about drawing the bowstring and releasing the arrow. It requires strategy – understanding the wind, distance, and draw strength. In business, the right strategy is crucial to overcoming challenges and achieving success.

4. Precision in Execution: Just as in archery, precision in every business step is important. From planning to execution, every step needs to be carried out meticulously to ensure success.

5. Patience and Discipline: Success in archery requires continuous practice and high discipline. Similarly, in business, patience and discipline are key to achieving long-term goals.

InshaAllah, I believe that by integrating the philosophy of archery into business, we can build stronger and more effective strategies.

We can achieve success not only through physical or material strength but also through mental and spiritual strength.

Archery teaches us that with calmness, precision, focus, and good strategy, we can achieve anything we dream of.
