The real reasons Malaysians hesitate to switch to solar.

Nobody likes paying high electricity bills. But every month, Malaysians continue to hand over their hard-earned money to TNB, watching their bills rise year after year. Meanwhile, solar energy is right there, offering a way to slash those costs.

So, what’s stopping people from making the switch? Let’s break down the most common reasons (and why they don’t hold up).

1. “Solar is too expensive!”

One of the biggest concerns is that solar is too expensive. Installing solar panels indeed requires an upfront investment, but what many people don’t realize is that solar pays for itself over time. The Malaysian government offers incentives like the Net Energy Metering (NEM) program, which allows homeowners to sell excess electricity back to TNB, reducing their monthly bills. At the same time, electricity rates keep increasing, which means the longer you wait, the more you pay. Switching to solar locks in lower energy costs for decades, making it a smart long-term investment rather than just another household expense.

So, the real question isn’t whether solar is too expensive. It’s whether you want to keep paying TNB forever or start investing in your own energy savings.

2. “Solar doesn’t work on cloudy or rainy days”

Again with the classic Malaysian concern: “But what about our monsoon season?”

Here’s what many don’t realize: solar panels don’t need direct sunlight to generate electricity. Even on cloudy or rainy days, modern panels still produce power, just at a slightly lower rate. Plus, with NEM, any extra power you generate on sunny days gets credited to your bill, so you can still benefit when it’s cloudy. So no, a few rainy afternoons won’t stop your savings!

3. “The process is too complicated”

Some people think installing solar is a huge hassle, but in reality, solar companies like us do everything for you. From assessing, consulting, installing and monitoring, including handling all the TNB paperwork, and licensed providers, making the process smooth and easy. Your job? Just sit back and enjoy lower bills!

4. “Solar panels require too much maintenance”

A common misconception is that solar panels require constant cleaning and servicing.

In reality, solar panels are low maintenance. They don’t have moving parts, so they rarely break down. Just an occasional cleaning (which Malaysia’s rain often takes care of) and a simple yearly check-up are all that’s needed.

Most panels also come with 25-year warranties, meaning you’re covered for decades!

5. “I don’t use that much electricity anyway”

Even if you think your bill isn’t “that bad,” it will keep increasing. Electricity rates have a history of going up every few years, and relying solely on TNB means you’re at their mercy.

With solar, your monthly savings add up over time. A small investment today can mean tens of thousands saved in the next 10-20 years. Future you will thank you!

The biggest reason people hesitate to switch to solar is that they see it as an upfront expense instead of a long-term investment. What they don’t realize is that every month they delay to change, they are already losing money to high TNB bills. In just five to seven years, a solar system can fully pay for itself. After that, it means enjoying free electricity while others continue to watch their bills increase. The real cost is not the price of installing solar, but the price of waiting too long to make the switch. So the question is, how much longer are you willing to pay more than you have to?
