It’s easy to get writer’s block. You only need to do one thing. Focus on perfection. Perfection in whatever you write. An article, a poem, a screenplay, or, in my case, an advert. This pursuit of perfection will only promise you ruin. Here’s why.
Writer’s block is a myth. And that makes “perfection” a cheap illusion.
You are afraid to write poorly. You hold yourself to a high standard. Which is good, but the approach is wrong. Writing poorly is the first step to writing ‘okay’ material. When you get to okay, you keep writing.
Then you become good.
And truth be told, most writers cannot rise above good writing by only writing. Your daily practice of writing ads has a limit. But this isn’t to say that your practice is meaningless. Good writing is your vehicle to the next level.
Great writing requires more than technical skills. It requires ideation. To appreciate imperfect structure, and how it contributes to the voice of your audience. Great writing only focuses on the intended reader. Their hopes, fears, thoughts, and their level of comprehension.
Great writing is invisible. Great writing is empathetic. It is flattering to the intended reader but may go unnoticed by an unworthy audience.
Write to be great, not perfect.
