Eerie figures draped in flowing robes are appearing in movie lobbies across Laos, raising chills and promoting a chilling new Cambodian film. “The Dark Mother,” a supernatural tale rooted in Cambodian folklore, is sending shivers down spines and gaining international recognition.

The film tells the moving story of Nuon, a mother whose life tragically ends during childbirth. Unbeknownst to her children, her spirit remains a silent guardian watching over them. As the truth of her demise comes to light, Nuon’s love for her children transcends the veil between worlds.

“The Dark Mother” is just one of several Cambodian films making waves on the international stage. Pok Borak, a government film official, highlights the growing trend of Cambodian films securing international releases. These films showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage and distinct storytelling traditions.

One such film, “The Ritual: Black Nun,” blends elements of familiar horror tropes with a distinctly Cambodian identity. The film weaves a tale of unwavering familial bonds and explores the deep-rooted customs of the region. Director Sem Visal believes the film can serve as a powerful tool for promoting Cambodian culture and tourism.

Bun Chan Nimol, CEO of Sastra Film, the company behind “The Dark Mother,” takes pride in the international success of Cambodian films. She highlights the growing interest from foreign audiences and the potential for these films to boost Cambodia’s tourism industry.

Despite the international acclaim, securing distribution hasn’t been easy. Nimol reveals the challenges of entering the Thai market, a neighbouring country with a more established film industry. However, she remains optimistic and plans a wider international release for “The Dark Mother,” including screenings in Europe.

Both Nimol and Borak call for continued support from the Cambodian public and filmmakers. They believe that by creating high-quality films that celebrate Cambodian culture, the industry can achieve international recognition and contribute to the nation’s growth.
