Thailand has become the first country in Asia to report a case of the deadlier Clade 1b variant of mpox. A 66-year-old European traveler who arrived in Bangkok was diagnosed with the disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global health emergency due to the surge in cases and the emergence of this more contagious strain.
Mpox is a viral illness that can be transmitted through close physical contact. It is characterized by fever, muscle aches, and skin lesions. While the disease has been known for decades, the recent outbreaks in Africa, particularly in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, have been driven by the Clade 1b variant. This variant is more contagious and has a higher mortality rate, especially among children.
To prevent the spread of mpox, Thailand has implemented several measures. Travelers from high-risk countries are required to register and undergo testing upon arrival. Additionally, close contacts of the confirmed case are being monitored for symptoms. While mpox is not as easily transmitted as COVID-19, the Thai authorities are taking precautions to contain the outbreak.
The WHO has urged manufacturers to increase the production of vaccines to combat the growing threat of mpox. As the global health community continues to monitor the situation, it is essential to stay informed about the latest developments and follow recommended preventive measures.
