On Monday, April 14, 2025, Katy Perry became the first pop star to sing in space as part of Blue Origin’s New Shepard NS-31 mission. This was a historic flight as it was the first all-female space crew in over 60 years. Katy Perry was one of six women aboard the Blue Origin spacecraft, which launched from West Texas. The suborbital flight lasted approximately 11 minutes.
The crew included Katy Perry (a Pop superstar), Lauren Sánchez (a Philanthropist and fiancée of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (owner of Blue Origin)), Gayle King (Journalist and TV presenter for CBS), Aisha Bowe (Former NASA rocket scientist and founder of STEM education company STEMBoard), Amanda Nguyen (a Civil rights activist and founder of Rise, a non-profit organization advocating for sexual assault survivors) and Kerianne Flynn (a Film producer).
The crew traveled beyond the Kármán line, which is internationally recognized as the boundary of space (about 100 kilometers or 62 miles above Earth). During the flight, they experienced a few minutes of weightlessness and had stunning views of Earth.
After the period of zero gravity and as they were returning to their seats, Katy Perry sang a rendition of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World”. She mentioned that it wasn’t about promoting her own music but about the collective experience and appreciating the beauty of Earth.
As a personal touch, Katy Perry brought a daisy flower with her on the mission as a tribute to her four-year-old daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom. She explained that daisies are resilient flowers that can grow through tough conditions, symbolizing strength and the beauty of Earth.
Upon returning to Earth, Katy Perry described the experience as “ten out of ten” and “second to being a mom.” She expressed that the experience made her feel “super-connected to love” and emphasized the importance of appreciating and protecting our planet.
Netizen’s Reaction
This experience has garnered various reactions from netizens. Unfortunately, they are mostly not-so-pleasant.
“katy perry went to space for like 4 minutes wtf is she kissing the ground for?”, said one X’s user.
“…meanwhile Sunita Williams (stranded on the ISS for 286 days): HOLD MY BEER”, said another user.
One X’s user defended Katy Perry in their comment saying, “Four minutes in space and she’s kissing the ground? Maybe gravity hit different up there. Let her have her moment, it’s not every day you float above Earth and come back to solid ground. Drama or not, she’s living her best life”.
