A Vietnamese immigration officer has been suspended following an incident that sparked widespread criticism online, involving the mistreatment of a Taiwanese tourist at Phu Quoc International Airport.
According to a statement released by Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security on Monday, the officer was disciplined for displaying an “inappropriate attitude” toward foreign visitors, a move aimed at addressing growing concerns about the treatment of tourists.
The incident occurred on May 13, when a Taiwanese family of four was preparing to depart from Phu Quoc Island. The parents, both of whom were tending to their ill children, requested to undergo immigration checks in pairs so they could individually carry and care for their children. Their appeal, however, was denied by the immigration officer, who instructed them to step aside without offering a clear explanation.
Seeking clarification, the family asked when they could proceed. In response, the officer reacted aggressively—snatching the mother’s boarding pass and tearing it in front of other travelers, while verbally reprimanding the family.
The upsetting experience was later shared by the mother on social media, where it quickly drew significant public attention and condemnation. Following the backlash, the torn ticket was reissued, and disciplinary action was taken against the officer involved. —VN Express
