A study by Aberdeen University and Transform Trade, published this fact on Wednesday, highlighting some of the unfair practices and below-the-production-cost payments made by the top international fashion brands to the Bangladesh garment industry workers.
Through a survey done on 1,000 Bangladeshi factories making garments for global fashion brands, these workers were found to be paid the same price despite the rising costs and global pandemic.
According to the published study, these garment factories are experiencing order cancellation, refusal to be paid, prices being reduced and delays in payment. Of the 1,138 brands named, 37 per cent were highlighted as having engaged in unfair practices. Those brands include Zara’s Inditex, Lidl, H&M, New Yorker, Primark and Next to name a few.
As a result, one in five garment factories struggled to pay the legal minimum salary since they reopened after the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
