Stop Telling Companies That Training Will Make Them Better. It’s Not Entirely True

Azleen

I noticed businesses nowadays, especially here in Malaysia, love to invest in training programs, expecting magical transformations in their workforce. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: traditional training rarely delivers the rapid results companies desperately need. While training builds important foundational knowledge, it’s like planting seeds and waiting for them to grow—a slow, uncertain process.

Organisations need hands-on advisory support—experienced guides who work shoulder-to-shoulder with their teams to drive immediate improvements. Think of it as the difference between watching cooking videos and having an experienced and knowledgeable chef in your kitchen, guiding your every move. The same concept can be applied to marketing, human resources, sales, and other areas. Here’s why advisory support outperforms traditional training.

Real-time problem-solving. While training teaches theoretical frameworks, advisors help tackle actual challenges as they emerge. They provide immediate solutions, preventing costly mistakes and accelerating learning through direct experience.

Contextual adaptation. Training programs often deliver generic knowledge, but advisors customise solutions to your specific business context. They understand your unique constraints, culture, and capabilities, ensuring solutions actually work in your environment.

Accountability and follow-through. After a training session, employees often revert to old habits. Advisors, however, create ongoing accountability. They help teams implement changes, measure results, and course-correct when needed. This continuous support ensures new practices stick.

The train-and-hope approach is too expensive to trust. That’s why successful companies are shifting away from it. Instead, they’re investing in embedded expertise—seasoned professionals who can guide their teams through complex challenges in real time. While training shouldn’t be abandoned entirely, it should be complemented with robust advisory support for maximum impact.
