A man in Shanghai, China, suffered a devastating financial loss of 200,000 yuan (approximately RM120,000) after unknowingly transferring money to what he believed was his long-distance girlfriend—only to discover that she was, in fact, an artificially generated persona created by scammers.
The victim, identified as Liu, was deceived by a sophisticated fraud syndicate that utilized advanced AI technology to generate lifelike images and videos of young women. These digital creations were designed to manipulate and lure unsuspecting individuals into fraudulent relationships. According to a report by CCTV News, Liu became emotionally attached to a woman known as “Ms. Jiao,” believing their connection to be genuine.
An Illusion of Love Turns into a Costly Mistake
Initially, Liu was convinced that he had found a romantic partner in Ms. Jiao. However, as their conversations deepened over two months, she began requesting financial assistance under various pretexts, including business investments and medical expenses for a supposed family member in need of surgery.
To solidify her credibility, “Ms. Jiao” went to great lengths to convince Liu of her authenticity. She provided what appeared to be an official identity card, medical records of her family members, and transaction receipts related to her business dealings. The seemingly convincing documentation reassured Liu, leading him to transfer substantial amounts of money—despite never having met her in person.
The Moment of Doubt and Shocking Revelation
After two months of communication and financial transactions, Liu began to sense inconsistencies in Ms. Jiao’s behavior and claims. Feeling uneasy, he decided to seek help from the police, who subsequently uncovered the shocking truth. Authorities confirmed that Liu had fallen prey to a sophisticated scam operation that exploited AI-generated imagery to create a deceptive yet convincing online persona.
Further investigations led the Chinese police to recover fabricated images that depicted “Ms. Jiao” engaged in everyday activities, reinforcing the illusion of a real-life identity. The scam syndicate had meticulously crafted these visuals to make the deception as believable as possible. —CCTV News
