Edson Arantes do Nascimento or Pele, the legendary Brazilian football player who made his name across the globe as an iconic and well-known footballer died on Thursday at the age of 82. Post-discovery of the tumour found on his colon, he had been going in and out of hospital for chemotherapy of late.
He was the only footballer who won the World Cup three times as a player. The death was confirmed by Kely Nascimento, his daughter on Instagram. According to Edinho, his son, Pele also had difficulty walking since the unsuccessful hip operation he had back in 2012.
International Olympic Committee awarded Pele “Athlete of the Century”, joint “Football Player of the Century” by FIFA and a “national treasure” by the Government of Brazil.
