Renault-Nissan Reloaded: Both Automakers Are Planning New Projects Together

News Asia 360

Renault and Nissan are looking to revitalise their longstanding relationship with a variety of industry initiatives through the course of an agreement, which will be marked by Renault scaling back its participation in the Japanese company. Sources have revealed that an announcement about the details of their business agreement will be made in London on February 6th.

The codename Reloaded coined reflects the five projects to be embarked upon by the Renault-Nissan alliance, together with their partner Mitsubishi Motors.

According to sources, Nissan also mulls to invest in Ampere, Renault’s spin-off electric-vehicle project.

To cooperate on fresh initiatives is a sign that the 23-year-old partnership, fragmented after Carlos Ghosn’s arrest in 2018, anticipates a mutual future together. Tensions between Japan and France heightened when Carlos Ghosn openly mentioned merging their companies, only to be followed by his unexpected arrest.

The Renault-Nissan joint venture has resulted in shared plants, collective purchasing and the development of vehicle components. Not only has it improved cost-efficiency but it also made them one of the largest automotive groups in the world. But, many internal and cultural issues have caused some hiccups and almost brought the partnership to its knees.
