The man accused of gunning down Mr Shinzo Abe, the former Japanese Prime Minister, is to be indicted by prosecutors subject to a psychiatric evaluation, according to sources close to the matter. The detention of Tetsuya Yamagami has been extended by the Nara District Prosecutors Office to evaluate his mental state and whether he is able to withstand trial or otherwise.

During the investigation, he made statements related to how he made a firearm that was used to shoot Abe. The prosecutors thus believe that he is fit enough to be tried.

Yamagami’s detention period will expire this coming January 10, 2023 and the result of his mental evaluation must be released before that. He was arrested on July 8 after shooting Abe in the western city of Nara. The source claims that he’s angry at Abe for allegedly having ties to the Unification Church, a religious group active in Japan with known mass weddings and aggressive solicitation tactics. He blamed the church for his family’s financial downfall after his mother made large financial donations to them.
