Safety tests raise concerns about children’s products on AliExpress and Shein.

Government officials in Seoul, South Korea, recently announced troubling news for parents who shop online. Tests conducted on children’s accessories from major Chinese e-commerce platforms AliExpress and Shein revealed high levels of toxic metals exceeding safety standards.

Out of seven items examined, two showed concerning results. A children’s watch from Shein had lead levels in its crown a staggering 278 times higher than the permitted limit. Additionally, the back of the watch contained chromium and nickel levels exceeding acceptable standards by 3.4 and 4.4 times, respectively. A necklace from AliExpress also contained lead, although at a level slightly above the national limit.

These metals pose significant health risks to children. Lead exposure can disrupt the developing reproductive system and increase cancer risk. Chromium can irritate the skin and respiratory system, while nickel can trigger allergies and even contribute to heart problems.

Concerned about the safety of imported goods, the Seoul Metropolitan Government launched a series of tests targeting popular Chinese e-commerce platforms. This initiative comes as cross-border shopping continues to rise, with many Korean consumers turning to these online retailers.

The test results will be shared with AliExpress and Shein, urging them to take appropriate action to ensure the safety of their products. Officials plan to continue testing throughout May, focusing on children’s leather goods like shoes and bags. Future tests in June will expand to include food containers and hygiene products, offering a broader picture of potential safety hazards.
