When one imagines a typical village house in Hong Kong, it is often associated with a three-story box that is marred by pipes, vents, air conditioners, clotheslines, small windows, neglected balconies, and metal-grate doors on the outside. The interior is also seldom designed with much thought.

Two architects have proved that typical Hong Kong village houses don’t have to be unremarkable. They designed a house in Tai Wai, located in the New Territories, that catches people’s attention, causing drivers to literally stop and stare.

BREADstudio’s founders, Benny Lee Chiu-ming and Paul Mui Kui-chuen, created a unique village house in Tai Wai, New Territories, that stands out from the typical three-story box structures commonly found in Hong Kong. This standalone house was designed specifically for the site and with the client’s needs in mind, clad in modern blue-black tiles and featuring a double-height living area. It is so distinct that passing drivers brake to admire the design.
