“The best writers are observers of human nature” – Dakota Robertson
They don’t have a choice. Naturally, good writers are curious about the world. They observe the sky, people walking around, the grandpa enjoying his coffee, and the delivery guy who looks lost.
But the best writers aren’t only curious, they record their curiosity. And they use it to create.
The best writers reflect on what they see. They don’t waste their curiosity. Their minds are a buzz. And when inspiration strikes, clarity follows.
Then… silence.
Satisfaction of having it figured out
Writers ideate for a living. To know what is “it” that will win over people and make clients happy. “It” could be human tendencies, unwritten rules, mistakes to not repeat, or profitable acts to copy.
I can’t speak for writers in general. But I can say when it comes to copywriting… Intensely observing life is my source of ideas.
I find observant people naturally give off a pleasant first impression. They are well-read and speak directly without malice. Having a conversation with them is nice. Like the first sip of a morning cup of coffee. And the buzz you get after.
Observant people are most likely good writers.
Beware the impostors
Someone who supposedly writes copy for a living but is obnoxious, loud, shallow, and narcissistic. They often write copy with no thought of the consumer. They produce advertising to inflate their egos. They don’t write to improve someone’s life.
Unfortunately, they are many of them. Fortunately, the competition isn’t tough.
