Throughout my 30-year academic career, I have served under many different bosses. Every time there was a change in leadership, people would speculate about what was to come. We often hear things like, “Ah! We are going to get a new vision and mission, a new work style and culture, etc.” Naturally, some would prefer the new style, and some would not. Similarly, new bosses would favour certain groups and not others.
I am now approaching my retirement, and naturally, younger colleagues come to me to seek my opinion and advice whenever there is a change in leadership. I often tell them to adapt to whatever style comes their way. In reality, nobody is perfect. We are not perfect, and the leaders are not perfect. What is important is to stay professional and do our best.
