Malaysia’s population has seen a significant increase, reaching 34.1 million people according to the latest data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia. This represents a growth of 700,000 individuals compared to the previous year.
However, while the overall population is expanding, there’s a concerning trend: the number of Malaysian citizens is declining relative to the foreign population.
This shift is largely attributed to the reopening of Malaysia’s borders after the pandemic and the implementation of policies aimed at regulating foreign workers.
As a result, the percentage of Malaysian citizens in the total population has dropped from 91.1% to 90%, while the foreign population has surged from 8.9% to 10%.
This demographic change is a key development that will likely have implications for various sectors of the Malaysian economy and society.
