Malaysia Ranked Second Worst for Work-Life Balance in Global Study

A new study by Remote, a human resources company, paints a concerning picture for Malaysian workers.

The Global Life-Work Balance Index ranked Malaysia second to last out of 60 high-income countries, making it the nation with the worst work-life balance in Asia.

The study analyzed factors like paid leave, healthcare access, workweek hours, and national happiness to determine which countries offered the best balance between work and personal life.

New Zealand topped the rankings, followed by European nations like Spain and France.

While Malaysia boasts a universal healthcare system, the study identified low scores in other key areas.

The country offers only 19 days of annual leave and 14 days of paid maternity leave.

Additionally, the minimum wage translates to a mere USD $1.07 per hour, and Malaysians work an average of 40.8 hours per week. The report also highlighted a low score for LGBTQ+ inclusivity.

These findings suggest that Malaysian workers face challenges in achieving a healthy work-life balance. Further efforts may be needed to improve workplace policies and create a more sustainable work environment for Malaysians.
