During a briefing on the progress of the “One Billion Trees” national campaign, B. Bat-Erdene, the Minister of Environment and Tourism, mentioned that Mongolia has planted more than 17 million trees since 2021.
Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia, covers a land area of 470.444 hectares, of which 116.258 hectares or 24.7% are forest resources area. Most of this area (84.4%) is covered by forests, while 15.6% is not forested. However, 17.098 hectares of this non-forested area need to be planted with trees. Through the “One Billion Tree” National Campaign, the government aims to increase the forest areas of the capital city from 20.2% to 22.9% by 2030. To achieve this goal, various training programs have been implemented, and 42.9 million trees are set to be planted throughout the country in 2023 alone.
The National University of Mongolia has launched a “Forestry” program, with 52 students enrolled for the current academic year. Over 1,000 teachers were trained in planting and caring for trees. The Mongolian University of Life Science and the Ministry of Defense have also organized a 40-hour training program on tree planting methods and techniques, which was attended by 23,600 citizens. Moreover, 120 citizens have received specialized training to become certified tree-planting trainers.
This will enable the increase of green space per person from 5.1 square meters in 2021 to 25 square meters by 2030.
