Universal and Illumination’s animated film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, opened in 4,343 theatres in North America and earned $204.6 million in its first five days, including $146.4 million over the weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
The movie has set a new record for video game adaptations, with an estimated $377 million in global earnings, surpassing “Warcraft’s” $210 million. It also surpassed “Frozen 2’s” record for animated films, which earned $358 million internationally. The film earned $204.6 million in its first five days in North American theatres and an additional $173 million in international earnings.
The PG-rated film depicts the origin story of Mario and Luigi, two Brooklyn plumbers who enter another world full of Nintendo’s famous characters after falling into a pipe. The film features Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, with a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film earned an A CinemaScore from audiences.
