Japan’s New Car Sales Drop Significantly In 2022, Lowest In 45 Years

Thanks to the pandemic, the industry experiences severe semiconductor shortages and supply chain disruptions that resulted in the decline of new car sales in Japan. It dropped to 5.6 per cent in 2022 from a year before, its lowest in 45 years according to the data from the industry bodies.

The Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association said a total of 4.2 million cars including mini-vehicles with up to 660cc capacity engines were sold last year. In general, domestic auto sales in 2022 dropped to their lowest level since 1977, after only 4.1 million vehicles were sold throughout the year.
