For the first time in Japan’s history, births fell below 800,000 in 2022. A new record low for the seventh consecutive year.
Many factors play into the record drop in births. Lifestyle changes, the new normal post-pandemic, and a growing trend of people marrying later in life are some of the contributing factors. Moreover, there are no signs of serious reforms to aid the already ageing nation.
Important to note, the number of deaths in 2022 hit a record high of 1,582,033. An increase of 129,744 compared to the previous year.
