Japan has announced the introduction of JESTA, a new digital travel authorisation set to become mandatory for Australians and other visa-exempt visitors from 2028. Australians planning a trip to Japan will soon need to apply for JESTA – the Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorisation – before boarding their flight. The new online system, launching in 2028, will apply to travellers from more than 70 visa-exempt countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and much of Europe.
