Is This the Most Dedicated Student in Japan? J-Pop Idol Yuzuki Nakashima Flies 1,000km Daily for University

In the vibrant landscape of Japanese pop culture, Yuzuki Nakashima, a 22-year-old luminary and cherished member of the prominent girl group Sakurazaka46, has garnered widespread admiration for her unwavering dedication to both her burgeoning entertainment career and her pursuit of higher education. Beyond her captivating stage presence, sweet vocal melodies, and vivacious personality that have already captivated nearly 100,000 followers on social media, Nakashima recently offered a compelling glimpse into her extraordinary commitment through a now-viral vlog chronicling her demanding daily school commute.

Despite establishing her professional base in the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, Nakashima’s academic aspirations led her to a university situated approximately 1,000 kilometers away in the southwestern city of Fukuoka. The recently shared video unveiled her remarkable routine, commencing with a 5:00 AM wake-up call for her morning preparations. By 6:00 AM, she embarks on her journey to Haneda Airport, intent on catching the earliest flight available. Her airborne transit culminates in an arrival at Kitakyushu Airport around 9:30 AM, from where she proceeds to the Fukuoka campus via taxi or bus. This remarkable daily pilgrimage consumes over two hours each way and incurs a substantial daily expense exceeding 15,000 yen (US$105).

Intriguingly, Nakashima transforms her extensive travel time into productive study sessions, diligently tackling assignments and reviewing academic materials. She often finds solace in a quiet room overlooking the campus, where she immerses herself in her studies. Notably, her fellow students regard her simply as a peer, unswayed by her idol status. Following her classes, she undertakes the reverse journey back to her Tokyo studio, where she engages in rigorous dance and vocal training that extends into the late evening hours. This demanding schedule has been her consistent reality for the past four years.

Prior to her ascent with Sakurazaka46, Nakashima demonstrated her inherent drive by working part-time to accumulate funds in pursuit of her singing aspirations. Now, having successfully navigated her dual commitments, she has proudly completed her studies and earned her diploma. She revealed that she consciously maintained the privacy of her student life to ensure the focus remained on her group’s performances, recognizing her graduation as the opportune moment to share this significant chapter of her life. Looking ahead, Nakashima expresses her eagerness to dedicate more energy to stage performances and offers an inspiring message to others: “If you have a dream, no matter how difficult it seems, be brave and go for it. Every second you spend chasing your dream will become one of the most valuable memories of your life.”

Nakashima’s extraordinary narrative has ignited considerable discussion across social media platforms, with numerous individuals expressing profound admiration for her exceptional dedication and resilience. One online commentator astutely observed that an idol’s true allure transcends mere aesthetics or talent, residing in their inner fortitude. Another lauded her as a “superwoman” for her adeptness in balancing academic pursuits, variety show appearances, and live performances. Echoing this sentiment, one of her university peers shared, “I had no idea someone at our school worked so hard. It is tough job-hunting now, but Nakashima has inspired me not to give up.”

Nakashima isn’t alone in using this method of travel. Last February, a Penang woman flies daily to work and saved thousands in rent while having enough time to spend with her children. —The Star
