Freelancing. It’s the word that shows laptop warriors working from exotic beaches, sipping coffee while raking in the dough, in my head. The fake feeling of freedom, flexibility, being your own boss. It’s the first destination people want to move away to—from their 9-to-5 grind. But let’s be real, beneath the surface of this seemingly idyllic work model lies a fundamental truth we often ignore: we’re still trading time for money. And that model is never the future. At least for me, it’s not.
Think about it. No matter how much you charge per hour, your income is ultimately limited by the number of hours you can physically work. It’s pretty much a hamster wheel. It’s a trap. The money stops when you stop working. One month you’re too busy with projects, the next you’re staring at an empty inbox, wondering how you’ll pay the bills.
Furthermore, I look at freelancing as the race to the bottom. There’s no value to offer as the only thing that differentiates you and the other guys is the price.
Hang on, I’m not saying freelancing is all bad. It can be a fantastic stepping stone, a way to gain experience, build your portfolio, and escape the soul-crushing monotony of a traditional job. But it shouldn’t be the final destination. It’s not the future of you. That’s my message here. There are better business models out there you can consider.
The true future here actually lies in creating assets and income streams that work for you, even while you’re sipping that coffee on the beach somewhere. Or, while watching Netflix, or even when you’re sleeping. Freelancing can be a liberating experience but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s the ultimate wet dream of true freedom, flexibility, and financial independence.
It’s not.
