This article is for all my petite girls out there.
Sabrina Carpenter is fun, sweet and ultimately, she’s short. I’m not poking at her height, considering that I’m also a petite girl myself, but to have such representation does a LOT to help boost a petite girl’s image.
And I’m saying this from someone who had struggled most of her life because of my height. People have tried to insult me over and over again.
“You are short!”, they said in an accusative and demeaning tone.
“I know. I’m aware of that fact”, I said without feeling sorry for myself. I mean, what can I do about it? It’s not something that I can change by drinking tons of Appeton Grow. Or do they want to pay for limb lengthening surgery? I don’t know nor do I care about it.
My focus here is to look at one of the leading figures in body positivity, that is, Sabrina Carpenter.
Poking Fun At Her Heights
According to one of my best friends, Mr. Google, Sabrina Carpenter is 1.52m. That makes her the smallest behind other pop giants like Lady Gaga (1.55m), Ariana Grande (1.54m), and so on and so forth. Well, by right Tila Tequila should be the smallest (ahem, 1.49m), but that’s a different story for another time.
The thing about this pop artist is that she’s unapologetically funny when it comes to her height. She said in an interview;
“I’m Sabrina and I’m very tall. And even taller when I take my shoes off.” The audience was heard laughing throughout this speech.
In a different interview she said, “People think that I’m really short but I am super tall. I’m like 6’1””.
Then in another interview she said, “I remember when I hit 5’ foot. I was like doing the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and I like.. found out that day and I was like “did that happen?” and I don’t think I’ve grown since..”
Heck, she even made fun of her height in her own song, Taste. The lyrics went: Oh, I leave quite an impression..Five feet to be exact..
So where am I going with all of these? Well, like she said in her Espresso: My give-a-fucks are on vacation. Making fun of this seems to be her Uno Reverse Card for those who make fun of her height and probably what used to be her insecurity.
Growing To Love And Live In Your Body
Yes, this is going to be on body positivity stuff. Why? Because living in a body where everyone looks like a giant is not really fun nor is it easy. Your ultimate weakness is out and visible like a sore thumb. But unlike a sore thumb, it cannot go away. All you can do is to embrace it, accept it, and live in it. Like I said above, there’s nothing we can do about it anyways.
Having a proud petite representative is important in a world where most people would make themselves appear taller. Lady Gaga, for example, said in an interview in 2009, “They use this trick where they can make you look bigger than you are. It’s great – I am not alone in using this trick. Lots of girls do it, you know.”
Everyone in social media is making themselves appear taller. Yes, that includes me too. I know some tricks to make myself appear taller in photos during photoshoot (and photographers are kind too in helping me appear so). It helps to boost my confidence but it might be harmful to other girls who are insecure about their heights.
Whilst Lady Gaga has since pointed out that she’s comfortable in her skin, I can’t shake this feeling of how we need someone who is out and proud of being small in height.
The Ultimate Downside Of Being Short: Appearing Bigger Suuuuuuuuuper Easily
It has been established early in this article that I don’t mind about my height but one thing that bothers me the most is how easily it is for me to look fat. It is as easy as being bloated for a day and it looks like I have gained 5kg.
Okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration but petite girls would get it.
In an article about Sabrina that I found online, I can’t help but laugh when I read the title and one of the subpoints. It goes:
How Has Sabrina Carpenter Embraced Her Curvy Figure?
Sabrina Carpenter has openly discussed her journey towards self-acceptance, especially regarding her curvy physique. She has often taken to social media to share empowering messages about body positivity and self-love. By doing so, she encourages her fans to embrace their bodies, regardless of societal expectations or norms.
Reading this made me confused… so confused that I started to google ‘curvy body type’ and none of the photos resembled Sabrina’s body type. In short, people are mean.
Final Thought
In conclusion, being short isn’t all bad. Sure, we might look like we got lost in the toy store sometimes, and finding clothes that fit can be a nightmare, but hey, at least we can always use the excuse “it’s just my height” when we can’t reach something. And who needs confidence when you’ve got humor? Ms. Carpenter does this so well.
So, to all my petite queens out there, hold your heads high (as high as you can reach, anyway) and embrace your shortness! After all, diamonds are small, and dynamite comes in tiny packages. We might be small, but we’re mighty!
P.S. If anyone tells you that you need to drink more milk to grow taller, just hit them with a “thanks, but I prefer my calcium in cheese form” wink.
