Hundreds of LGBTQ+ activists gathered outside a condominium in Thailand, demanding justice after a brutal attack on a young gay man. The victim, identified as Mister Teen Thailand, was subjected to a horrific assault where boiling soup was poured over his head. This incident quickly gained widespread attention on social media, igniting public outrage.
The assault, which took place last week, involved a freshman at a Thai university who was allegedly targeted by senior students. Reports indicate that one of the perpetrators inflicted severe burns on the victim, forcibly cut his hair, and extorted him for 50,000 baht (approximately $1,477). In a shocking turn of events, the attackers coerced him into signing a fraudulent loan contract to ensure payment. Additionally, he was forced to withdraw from certain course subjects as part of the intimidation tactics.
The case took an unexpected twist when it was revealed that one of the individuals present during the attack was Prare Raksak, Miss Teen Trans Thailand. Although Prare did not directly partake in the violence, her presence at the scene sparked controversy. She later issued a statement claiming she attempted to intervene and was caught off guard by the assault. Nonetheless, following intense public backlash, she was stripped of her title by the event’s organizers, who expressed deep regret over the situation.
As the case gained momentum, another student came forward with a similar testimony, revealing that they too had been subjected to violence and forced to pay 45,000 baht to avoid further abuse.
Authorities have since identified several suspects but have not yet detained them, stating that they are awaiting the victims’ medical reports before taking further legal action. This perceived lack of urgency has fueled anger among the LGBTQ+ community, particularly among ladyboys, who organized a demonstration outside the condominium where one of the alleged attackers resides.
A representative from the protest emphasized that their intent was not to incite violence but rather to seek an apology and accountability. “We belong to the same community and should be standing together, not harming each other,” they stated.
Local police intervened to mediate discussions between the protesters and authorities. However, after over an hour of negotiations, no concrete resolution was reached. Meanwhile, the victim took to social media to express gratitude for the overwhelming support, further galvanizing the movement.
LGBTQ+ activist Kan Jompalang underscored the significance of this case, asserting that the community does not condone violence under any circumstances, regardless of the perpetrator’s identity. The incident is now being compared to the 2024 “Warrior Katoeys Day” demonstration, a historic moment of activism within the Thai LGBTQ+ movement.
The primary assailant, identified as Peem, has since issued a tearful apology, offering compensation and pleading for forgiveness. However, activists and members of the LGBTQ+ community remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice, vowing to ensure that the case is not overlooked or dismissed.—X
