Gong Li, a well-known Chinese actress, expressed her delight to Reuters yesterday about Michelle Yeoh’s recent accolades at two of the most prestigious award ceremonies – The Oscars and The Golden Globes. This was especially encouraging for other Asian actors in the industry.

Last year, Malaysian actress Yeoh was awarded the Best Actress title for her part in Everything Everywhere All at Once, an interdimensional journey, at two different award ceremonies.

Gong Li achieved international renown in the cinema when she starred in films such as Red Sorghum and Farewell My Concubine back in 1993. Her success continued beyond Chinese cinema, with roles in Memoirs Of A Geisha and Miami Vice.

At the age of 57, she is still one of the most popular actresses worldwide.

This week, she made a triumphant return to the Cannes Film Festival’s red carpet after being in a pandemic-enforced lockdown for the past three years. In late 2022, China lifted its stringent policy of having zero Covid-19 cases and opened up its borders to international travellers.
