From Mahjong to Meowjong: Cat’s Accidental Arson Goes Viral

News Asia 360

Imagine leaving for a casual game night with friends, only to return home and find your apartment on fire! This is exactly what happened to a woman in China after her cat, in a mischievous twist of fate, became an accidental arsonist.

The culprit? A curious feline named Jingoudiao, a golden British shorthair. While his owner was enjoying mahjong, Jingoudiao managed to activate the touch panel on the induction cooker, igniting a fire that caused significant damage to the first floor of their loft. The cost? A whopping 100,000 yuan (S$19,200)!

Thankfully, firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread further, and Jingoudiao, despite being covered in ash, escaped the ordeal unharmed. The story took an unexpected turn when the owner decided to share it on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok. There, she jokingly claimed she was making Jingoudiao “work off his debt” through live-stream appearances!

The internet, it seems, couldn’t resist Jingoudiao’s adorable charm. Videos showcasing the furry culprit garnered a whopping eight million views, with netizens swooning over his cuteness. While the owner playfully dubbed Jingoudiao an “arsonist,” she acknowledged some responsibility for the incident. In a later post, she shared a letter of apology signed by both her fingerprint and Jingoudiao’s paw print! This lighthearted apology also served as a reminder to everyone about the importance of fire safety, particularly in the kitchen.
