A woman in eastern China unexpectedly gave birth to a healthy baby boy just four hours after discovering she was pregnant. The 36-year-old woman, surnamed Gong, from Hangzhou, went to the hospital for a hypertension problem only to be told she was eight months pregnant. This came as a shock to Gong, who had previously been diagnosed with infertility due to a womb syndrome. This remarkable incident has garnered widespread attention on Chinese social media.
According to a report by Chao News, the woman, identified by her surname Gong and her husband had previously explored in vitro fertilization (IVF) but were rejected by doctors who advised her to lose weight first. However, their application was declined, with doctors advising Gong to lose weight first. Although the report did not specify her exact weight, it described her as being tall, overweight, and having a strong preference for desserts.
In early December, Gong experienced arm numbness and went to a local clinic, where a check-up revealed high blood pressure. This prompted her to seek treatment at a major hospital. At the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Hospital, doctors learned that Gong’s menstrual period had been absent for months. An ultrasound examination revealed that she was pregnant. Due to Gong’s critical condition, an emergency cesarean section was performed, delivering a healthy 2kg baby boy.
Reflecting on the experience, Gong expressed her surprise and joy, saying, “There were only four hours from finding out I was pregnant to the birth of my baby.”
This is not the first such case at the hospital. The hospital has apparently seen similar cases before. Several years ago, a 29-year-old woman weighing 100kg arrived for surgery and was unexpectedly informed that she was 23 weeks pregnant.
According to Dr. Yang Liwei, an obstetrician at the hospital, some overweight women may not notice physical changes associated with pregnancy, especially if they don’t gain significant weight. Additionally, fetal movement may be less noticeable in these cases. Dr. Yang emphasizes that a weak pregnancy reaction is not necessarily a positive sign. Women who are unaware of their pregnancy may miss prenatal checkups, which can jeopardize the health of both mother and baby.
