Embracing Differences: The Power of Being Unique

In a world that often celebrates conformity and uniformity, standing out can be daunting. This sentiment resonates deeply with the themes of two poignant books, “A Peacock in the Land of Penguins” by BJ Gallagher and Warren H. Schmidt, and “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” by Richard Bach. These books encapsulate the struggles and triumphs of embracing one’s uniqueness in environments that push for sameness. Drawing from my personal journey, I have found that while being different is challenging and can sometimes lead to feeling like an outcast, it is through embracing these differences that we can truly make an impact and achieve remarkable results.

The Land of Penguins: A Metaphor for Corporate Conformity

“A Peacock in the Land of Penguins” uses a charming allegory to illustrate the challenges of fitting into a corporate culture that values uniformity over individuality. The story follows a colourful peacock who finds himself in a land populated by black-and-white penguins. The penguins, representing the traditional corporate culture, are initially resistant to the peacock’s vibrant feathers and unique ideas. This resistance mirrors the real-world experiences many of us face when our innovative thoughts and unconventional approaches clash with established norms.

In my professional journey, I have often felt like the peacock among penguins. Entering the structured environment of academia and the corporate world, I quickly realised that my ideas and approaches were not always welcomed with open arms. The pressure to conform and to tone down my distinctiveness, was immense. It became clear that to be accepted, many individuals felt compelled to sacrifice their beliefs and principles. However, I discovered that true success and fulfilment came when we began to embrace our uniqueness rather than hide it.

The Flight of Jonathan Livingston Seagull: Pursuing Perfection

“Jonathan Livingston Seagull” tells the story of a seagull who is bored with the mundane life of squabbling for food and yearns for something greater. Jonathan’s passion for flying and his relentless pursuit of perfection set him apart from the flock, leading to his ostracism. Yet, it is through this isolation that Jonathan discovers the true essence of his being and reaches heights he never imagined possible.

This narrative mirrors my own experiences in pursuing goals that were often deemed unconventional or overly ambitious by my peers. For example, pursuing four international accreditations – AMBA, EQUIS, AACSB, and ABEST21- simultaneously when I was a Dean, and then setting a target to nurture 30% graduate entrepreneurs up from 3% as a Vice Chancellor, seemed impossible and crazy to many. But with hard work and dedication, I believe nothing is impossible.

Like Jonathan, I have faced criticism and exclusion for striving for excellence and refusing to settle for mediocrity. The journey was often lonely and fraught with self-doubt. However, the sense of liberation and achievement that came from following my path was unparalleled. We achieved three of the four accreditations, and nurtured 15% graduate entrepreneurs. Not a bad achievement, and definitely can be better.

Embracing Diversity: The Path to Innovation and Success

The core lesson from both “A Peacock in the Land of Penguins” and “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” is the importance of embracing differences and the value that diversity brings. In the context of my professional environment at the university, fostering an atmosphere where diversity of thought and innovation are encouraged has proven to be immensely beneficial. Moving away from traditional methods and embracing innovation driven by science and technology has not only advanced our objectives but also created a more inclusive and dynamic culture.

Among other initiatives, we co-designed a new degree programme, Computing and Data Science, with tech giants like Microsoft, Huawei, and Alibaba, offered a tech foundation class for religious students, and set up Ignite Venture Innovation Lab to drive innovation-driven entrepreneurship backed by science and technology. We also established several research centres in the areas of agriculture, tropical rain forest, and rare earth and minerals. In a short time, we saw significant results from these initiatives. As Vice Chancellor and a leader, we together created the vision, foster empathy by listening to the ground, and then we empowered, enabled, and provided the necessary supports (equity).

I believe when individuals feel free to express their unique perspectives and ideas, the potential for creativity and innovation increases exponentially. This environment not only nurtures individual growth but also drives collective progress. Encouraging students and colleagues to embrace their distinctiveness has led to groundbreaking projects and entrepreneurial ventures that might never have emerged in a more conformist setting.

Overcoming the Fear of Being Different

One of the most significant hurdles in embracing uniqueness is overcoming the fear of being different. Society often stigmatises those who deviate from the norm, making it difficult to break free from the mold. However, the experiences of the peacock and Jonathan Livingston Seagull serve as powerful reminders that the rewards of staying true to oneself far outweigh the temporary discomfort of nonconformity.

In my advisory role to junior colleagues, I often recommend reading “A Peacock in the Land of Penguins” and “Jonathan Livingston Seagull.” These books provide invaluable insights into the benefits of embracing one’s true self and the positive impact it can have on personal and professional development. By sharing these stories, I aim to inspire others to pursue their passions and to recognise the unique value they bring to the table.

Creating an Inclusive Culture

To cultivate an environment where individuality is celebrated, it is essential to create an inclusive culture. This involves not only accepting but actively encouraging diversity in all its forms. At our university, we have implemented initiatives that promote inclusivity, such as mentorship programs, diversity training, and platforms for sharing innovative ideas. These efforts have helped to break down barriers and create a supportive community where everyone feels valued.

It is also crucial to lead by example. By openly embracing my differences and sharing my journey, I hope to set a precedent for others to follow. Demonstrating the tangible benefits of diversity and the positive outcomes of embracing uniqueness can encourage more individuals to step out of their comfort zones and contribute their unique perspectives.

Conclusion: The Power of Authenticity

Ultimately, the stories of the peacock and Jonathan Livingston Seagull highlight the transformative power of authenticity. Staying true to oneself, even in the face of adversity, is a courageous act that can lead to profound personal growth and professional success. Embracing differences not only enriches our own lives but also enhances the collective potential of our communities and organisations.

In a world that often values conformity, it is essential to remember that our unique qualities are our greatest strengths. By celebrating diversity and encouraging authenticity, we can create environments where innovation thrives, and everyone has the opportunity to soar to new heights. The journey may be challenging, but the rewards of being true to oneself and embracing one’s differences are immeasurable.

  1. For me, this will never be a 5 min read. I’d go back and forth finding and understanding why we are who we are, because it’s a wonderful piece to read. Although we come in limited band of individuals, we are limitless. Our thoughts and opinions matter. Thank you.
