A 7.4 magnitude earthquake has struck southeast Turkey, killing at least 10 people and causing buildings to collapse in several provinces. The quake was felt in neighboring countries such as Lebanon and Syria, where some buildings reportedly collapsed. The earthquake was also felt in Greece, Jordan, Iraq, and the UK.
The US Geological Survey said the quake was centered 18 km deep and 33 km from Gaziantep, a major regional city. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) and the EMSC monitoring service also evaluated the quake for the risk of a tsunami. Turkey sits on top of major fault lines and experiences frequent earthquakes.
The quake hit near Kahramanmaras and was centered in the town of Pazarcik. In Beirut and Damascus, buildings shook, and many people went out on the streets in fear. Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) is reportedly monitoring and responding to the earthquake.
