Dr. Xiao Jiulin, a diminutive figure of just 90 centimeters tall, has dedicated his life to serving his impoverished village in Jiangxi, China. Despite his physical limitations, caused by a childhood illness that stunted his growth, Dr. Xiao possesses an extraordinary spirit of compassion and a deep commitment to his community. This 60-year-old doctor has treated over 2,000 villagers in recent years, with his wife, Huang Shuzhen, playing a crucial role in his journey.
Overcoming Skepticism and Starting Small
Xiao’s early life was marked by both physical struggles and a lack of access to medical care in his underdeveloped village. Inspired by his own experiences, he pursued a career in medicine, borrowing 500 yuan (about $69) to establish a small clinic. However, his height initially made villagers question his abilities.
One villager, reflecting on their first impression of Xiao, admitted, “When I first saw him, I thought, ‘How can someone so small treat patients?’ I assumed he was a fraud.”
Over three decades, he gradually won the trust of his patients through his exceptional medical skills and unwavering kindness.
A Unique Partnership
Dr. Xiao’s wife, Huang Shuzhen, is an integral part of his practice. Xiao met his wife, Huang, more than 20 years ago. Known for her beauty in the village, Huang initially found Xiao’s stature surprising but was later moved by his selflessness and courage. Recognizing his dedication and enduring the initial shock of his height, she became his unwavering supporter. She confessed her love, telling him, “I have fallen for you. Let’s face life’s hardships together.”
In the absence of proper roads, Huang carries Dr. Xiao on her back for house calls, often enduring hardships and even sacrificing their own home in her haste to reach a patient in need.
Her commitment extends beyond physical support, as she willingly shares the challenges of his profession. In one instance, Huang’s determination to help Xiao reach a patient led her to forget a fire burning in their kitchen, which tragically destroyed their home. Xiao, understanding her urgency, responded without blame, saying, “We always trade our time for the lives of the villagers.”
Compassionate Care for the Community
Dr. Xiao’s practice is marked by his genuine care for his patients. He charges minimal fees, allows for deferred payments, and provides free follow-up care for those with chronic illnesses. He regularly visits the elderly to monitor their health, demonstrating a true commitment to the well-being of his community.
“Everyone in this village feels like family to me,” Xiao shared with Jiangnan Daily News. “My greatest hope is for young people to continue serving the villagers.”
A Recognized Legacy
Dr. Xiao’s story has touched the hearts of many across China, inspiring admiration for his selfless service and highlighting the unwavering support of his wife. Now a grandfather to three grandchildren, Xiao’s family was recognized as one of China’s Most Virtuous Families by the All-China Women’s Federation.
His story of resilience and compassion has inspired countless people on Chinese social media.
“Salute this great rural doctor! His body may have suffered, but his heart is incredibly strong and kind,” commented one netizen. Another remarked, “Xiao’s wife is just as selfless and dedicated as he is. Kind hearts have a way of finding each other.”
